Newsletter: Author Carla Swafford – Book Covers

This is not certain, but this may be the hardcover design beneath the jacket wrap with the original cover (same as ebook and paperback–gold apple wrapped barbwire). It will probably be released in September with the audio. You are the first to see this.

Audio, you say? You caught that, did ya? Yep. The narrators are working on it now. I’m so excited. If you knew me, you would know I rarely get excited about anything. Happy, yes. Excited, no.

As this is the hardcover design, I’ve been thinking of changing the cover design on the ebook. Maybe after Christmas. What do you think of a sexy person or couple? Or it could be similar to the hardcover? What do you think.

Speaking of covers, what do you think about the wave of romance books with artistic designs or cartoon covers? I don’t know about you, but when I see cartoon covers I think rom-com or sweet (closed-bedroom-door) stories. And I think women’s fiction (no or a little romance) for the artistic ones. Yes. I know my vampire book had the apple. Not very vampire-ish, but think Twilight.

I suspect there are two reasons for this. First, newer readers love paperback and hardcovers. They are embarrasses by the clutch or bare chested men on the covers. I think they are gorgeous, but I always kept in mind, people around me might not appreciate the view. So when I worked and took a book with me (for breaks and lunch), I turned it upside down. On the books I released last year (Loving The Small-Town Preacher’s Son & Loving The Small-Town Hero), I had bare-chested men on the ebook covers and farm scenes on the paperback with that same thought.

The second reason is social media (especially TicTok). Even though you can mark your sites for 18 and over, there are adults who complain (makes you wonder if some are competitive authors) and others who get upset when their child sees the pictures, even though most social media have age limits (13?). It’s hard being a parent nowadays. Kids want to participate in what’s popular, but most of social media is adults only. Plus TikTok is strict (no male nipples, no people with guns even if book covers, you know, like on suspense books). Yeah. I’m a little bitter about that.

Party Online

On July 16, there will be an old-fashioned online party in the Facebook group called Southern Sizzle Readers. If you’re interested in meeting new authors, hearing about their books, and possibly winning a prize or two, come and join the group. Be sure to put 7 p.m. central, July 16, on your calendar. Here’s the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/southernsizzle

Errors In Books

The other day, I was on an author panel and the question came up about why do so many books today have errors, even the big name authors with the big publishing houses.

If you’ve been reading my posts for a time, you know I make errors. My posts are edited by only me. Shocker, right? Ha! While my books, and hopefully all the books by other authors, have been edited by professional editors. Not by your cousin who made A’s in English, or the guy down the street who’s a big fan. After I write a book, I go over it twice more (includes reading it out loud). Then send it to my copy editor. She makes comments and corrects the obvious mistakes I missed. And she sends it back to me. I go over her notes and make more changes. And yep, I send it back to her and she checks it once more. After that, I look at it again. Yep. Once again.

At the big publishing houses, the editor looks over an author’s book and makes notes to send to the author to make changes. That editor is only looking at the whole story. (I’m going to use female pronouns to make it simpler). Then after the author makes the changes she agrees to, it’s sent to the copy editor. The copy editor then corrects the grammar and make more notes for the author to check on possible needed changes. After the author changes or okays what the copy editor has done, it will go back to the copy editor and/or the editor. Then sometimes, it’s formatted and sent to the author one more time to look for anything that might have been missed.

Speculation only: If you noticed I mentioned the editor and copy editor suggest changes. I believe sometimes they will not suggest changes to the storyline, if the author is a big name. Thus why we often read our favorite New York Bestselling author and get frustrated by the errors or long dragged-out scenes in their books. It’s like they didn’t want to take a chance of messing with the author’s “magic.”

Look Out

For those who haven’t asked for the short story, Kidnapped For A Day, be on the look out. It should show up free on B&N, Amazon, etc. In September, I plan to discounts several of my books. I’ll remind you again.

Hugs. Keep reading,

Carla

Bzzz! Busy Bee

The past couple weeks (and more) I’ve been busy. As many authors do, I try to help other writers with their work. At first, it had started with one friend asking me to be a beta reader. That’s when an unedited book is read by someone and they give suggestions about the story. It may include catching grammar or spelling errors, but is not considered to be editing.

Then another friend asked me to check their synopsis. It’s to make sure the heart of the story is provided in a concise but entertaining way. Usually one to three pages, sometimes five (but rarely). Most editors and agents prefer one page. Another friend asked for help with their blurb. That’s the short information on the back of a book. Then finally, as pre-arranged by my best friend, I beta read her book.

I tell you, I’m a slow reader. So it’s amazing I did all of that in such a short time. I read numerous books each year, but my attention span is short. Thus why I only publish one to two books a year. Well, that and all the promo that I have to do to get my name out there.

Triggers

Authors are placing trigger warnings and tropes in the front pages of their books and on their websites with the book descriptions. I have too because certain triggers and tropes are what many readers want to read.

Used to be a reader only needed the blurb on the back, but I understand triggers and tropes helps. With the extra information, hopefully, the book won’t get a one-star rating just because it has foul language or bondage or sex. Yep, some people give books less stars because of “too much sex.” Like one of mine. Crazy, right?

Don’t forget to order your copy of Savage Champion. Release date is April 23.

Regards.

My first shipment of books came in and the cover was out of wrack. So I placed gold tape on the edge. Looks fancy, doesn’t it? I went in and adjusted the cover for the next batch before ordering. So hopefully they will be okay. But I do like that gold edge.

I will be selling these in Montgomery (Alabama) May 17 & 18. Be sure to buy a ticket (general admission can be as low as $5) Go to my website carlaswafford.com and click on On-Line and In-Person. The link is there for the tickets and more information.

Today is April Fools day in the U.S.A. A time for people to pull pranks on each other. I’m not wired that way. So no worries. Just have a good day, and if you celebrate Easter, I hoped it was as lovely there as it was here.

By the way, it’s not too late to ask to be an ARC reader of Savage Champion. Just email me at authorcarlaswafford @ gmail.com (no spaces) with your mailing address and I’ll send you a paperback copy (U.S. subscribers only). Deadline for me to mail it to you is April 7. Will probably take a week to arrive. Of course, there’s a catch. You’ll need to read it as soon as it arrives and post a review on Goodreads before or on the release day.

Anyway, keep reading (and writing if that’s your thing) and have a wonderful early April.

Regards.

Newsletter: Author Carla Swafford – ARCS & Happy Irish Day

Am I Irish? Well, per 23 & Me, I am. The report didn’t show the exact percentage as it was mixed in as British & Irish (83%) along with many other smaller percentages. And Ancestry DNA doesn’t actually say it, but in the small print it shows Northern Ireland to be included under Scotland (38%). Of course, Britain includes Scotland. Yes, I’m aware the Irish immigrated to Scotland and vice versa. But when I was growing up, I heard Dutch, German, and Welsh, not a word about Irish or Scottish. Goodness, I had no idea I was a Scot until just a few years ago when a cousin of mine gave me a copy of the family tree school report (1960s) he’d done after talking with my maternal grandfather. Live and learn, right?

Writing Tip

Probably like you, I read a lot of books. Nowadays, I stick to romances because my spare time is limited, but many years ago, I read historical non-fiction and celebrity biographies and autobiographies. Back to fiction. One of the things I’ve been noticing in current books is dialogue being broken up by one speaker. Let me give you an example.

This is the accepted way.

“Damn. You better be glad I didn’t know you had this on.” he leaned over and ran his tongue along the string of pearls. “We would’ve never made it to the wedding.” The heel of his palm rotated, and she bowed her back. “Hold onto the headboard.”

She stretched and grasped beneath the edge above her head. As she suspected, her breasts lifted out of the corset.

JAKE, A SOUTHERN CRIME FAMILY NOVEL.

The following is the confusing way.

JAKE, A SOUTHERN CRIME FAMILY NOVEL

I would read this as the first sentence is Jake. Second sentence is Angel. Third is Jake. Because dialogue is only broken to another paragraph when it’s another person speaking. Side note: If they talk at the same time, it’s still in separate paragraphs, but the narration mentions it’s spoken at the same time.

Anyway, I suggest buying The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White (also known as Strunk and White). The book is thin, but packed with a ton of information. They tell you how to make your writing clear.

I’m certainly not perfect (if you read my newsletters, I almost always have an error in them), but I refer to the little book mentioned in the previous paragraph and Grammar for Dummies when I have a questions. Love the “For Dummies” books.

Blurb, Excerpt, Tropes

If you haven’t read my earlier newsletters talking about it, here’s a little info on Savage Champion and an excerpt. See if it is your type of genre.

The blurb.

When a private investigator tracks down a client’s lost sister, he discovers she’s not lost or the client’s sister. The woman is a vampire on a campaign of vengeance. Somehow he must stop her killing spree and protect her at the same time.

Tori Amherst

I died years ago.

In my savage new life, I revenge the helpless.

But a hunter came. A human. A former cop. Now a private eye.

His body, his blood, and his wounded soul are perfect.

Then I discover I’m not a champion, but a terror.

Ronan Michaels

I died in her arms.

But I woke to a new life full of hate.

She hides a truth. I hate secrets.

I crave her body, her blood, and her lost soul.

Then I discover the lies.

I will get my revenge and she will be mine.

(In The Middle of Chapter One)

Tori

Out of the corner of my eye, I noted the Mustang idling a block away. He was good. Certainly better than the others who’d tried to track me over the last few years. But if the truth were told, I really didn’t care if he followed. What was there to worry about?

I’d checked in with the Alabama master vampire over an hour ago. He’d been happy to see I’d returned home. If he hadn’t been my master—the vampire who created me—I would need his permission to stay in his domain. This would ensure they wouldn’t send an enforcer or assassin to remove me.

My only concern, momentarily, was the man following me. If he’d been a vampire, I would merely ask him to state his business. But with his being human, there was a different protocol. For now, the questions were, what did he want? And was he part of the LVH?

The Legion of Vampire Hunters drove white cars and vans, and it was unlikely they owned a sporty blue car like his. Possibly a human private detective had decided to follow me. Didn’t he  know curiosity killed the cat? Or the nosey investigator?

I grinned, flashing my deadly canines. It didn’t matter if someone saw them. In and around the club, others would only think I was part of the crowd, pretending to be a child of the night. Little did they know the real thing was among them.

Waved in by the bouncer, I threaded my way through the thick, pulsating crowd inside. The smell of sexually excited bodies filled my senses. The music thumped through my body. Couples swayed on the dance floor, many grinding pelvises together more than dancing.

As a human, I had enjoyed the night life and the pounding music. As a vampire, I absolutely loved it. So many sensations to drink in. I closed my eyes for a second and inhaled the wonderful smell of humanity. Liquor had nothing over heated bodies and hot blood. The high was better than a manmade drug, legal or illegal.

Strategic black lights lit the large room, leaving several dark corners, ideal for feeding. And I regularly exploited them. Dim lighting wasn’t a problem for me. Vampires’ night vision was excellent.

Tonight, blood didn’t drive me to the night club, but the need for human company. A frantic feeling saturated the air in the nightclub. A sensation in the air to live for the moment for tomorrow might never come. Like many, I believed in the fast-paced world—live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse.

I sniggered at the ironic thought. I was a step above a corpse.

Coming to a stop at a corner booth, I stared at the young couple occupying the V-shaped bench seat. They completely ignored me. Their arms and legs entwined, clothes in disarray. I leaned over the table and lightly tugged at the man’s sleeve and then fanned five one-hundred-dollar bills in front of his face.

“What’s that for?” His eyes widened with interest.

“The booth?” With a hint of a smile, I waited for his decision.

He shrugged, snatched the cash out of my hand, and pulled the protesting girl out of the booth, heading toward the bar.

I slid in until my back was against the corner. A great place to see the majority of the room. With one leg tucked beneath me, I waited to see if my stalker had followed.

A little bit of time passed before he walked into the club. Though I’d seen him distinctly in the dark as he followed me in his Mustang, seeing him this close was a treat. So masculine and striking.

I studied him. He appeared to be six-foot, maybe six-one, late twenties. Looking at the lines around his eyes, I changed it to early thirties. His wind-tossed dark hair gave him the air of a poet or musician. Thick strands framed his lightly tanned, high-cheekboned face giving him an untamed look along with his five o’clock shadow. He had an aquiline nose above pouting lips. The type of lips that I would enjoy sucking and licking, and having the favor returned.

What would it be like to touch him, taste his blood? A shake of my head cleared my mind of that notion. Hunger for blood was always below the surface, but tonight my hunger was for what I sensed in the man.

Not since my reincarnation had a human interested or attracted me to such an extent I almost felt as if he spellbound me. But he wasn’t a warlock. Otherwise, I would sense the magic surrounding him.

While I studied him, I sensed his discomfort with the nightclub. Was he wondering how many were actually vampires? Would he be disappointed to find I was the only one in the club tonight? Did he actually know there was such a creature?

He was good. Not once had he looked my way, but still he maneuvered through the gyrating  crowd and stopped at the bar nearest to my booth. He motioned to the bartender and leaned over, probably so he could be heard. The bartender nodded and began to pull a draft.

Without glancing around, he sat on a stool and lifted his gaze, staring straight at me.

Such soulful hazel-green eyes. I sighed. Vampire vision was a blessing. Had he sensed me? Obviously, he knew where I sat. I was alone. Did he feel my interest? Was he psychically sensitive? Was that why my attraction for him was so strong?

Of course, the overwhelming question was, why was he following me? Well, I could wonder about him all night. Or with certainty, I could learn my answers the easy way. I gave him a big smile.

That’s a little taste. The book has a prologue that shows how she became a vampire. It is a gruesome beginning. And there’s another gruesome scene in the book where they chop up a zombie. I wanted to warn you in case it wasn’t to your taste.

Like my other books, it does have sex scenes throughout and a lot of curse words. It is a spicy romance with suspense and mystery tied in.

Here are the tropes: Human vs Vampire, Alpha Hero, Dark Secret, Secret identity, Redemption/Revenge, Person in distress, Protector, Second Chance, Under a Spell.

Well, have a fun time drinking green beer and getting pinched.

Thanks.

Newsletter: Author Carla Swafford – Countdown Starts

T-Minus and Counting

Today, I added a countdown to my website. So 52 days and counting before Savage Champion is released into the world. As I have mentioned before, it’s a paranormal horror romance. If you have read my Circle books and enjoyed them, you won’t be bothered by the little bit of horror in my newest book. You have to remember, I am a romance writer. So most of my books (in my mind) are Romance, Suspense, and then everything else. The only books I’ve published without suspense (true suspense, not just wondering will they ever have a happy ending) are my hockey romance. That’s pure relationship. They were fun to write and very spicy.

Anyway, please pre-order Savage Champion. The price is only 99 cents. So you’re not endangering your life savings. HA! And be sure to tell your friends.

Spicy vs Erotica

Don’t read this section if naughty words bother you. Then again, why are you getting my newsletter? All of my books have these naughty words in them.

Have you ever wondered about the difference between spicy and erotica? You know that every author has their own answer, because what I think is hot and what someone else believes is hot can be totally poles apart. I’ve read adult books since I was twelve. Of course, I never understood the sex scenes until my older female cousin explained it to me at fourteen. That’s when we found “those books” beneath our fathers’ beds. (Long story for a day when I’ve had a margarita or two.) So here’s my explanation.

Spicy – A book that has sex scenes, but not necessarily many of them and not necessarily using actual body parts. Anywhere between a hard penis to a sword of manhood, you get the idea. I tell people all the time my books are spicy. They are, but I’ve never thought of them having a lot of sex scenes, though I will say my characters think about sex a lot. But don’t we all? What? You don’t. Really? *smirk*

Erotica – A book that has lots of sex scenes and mainly is about sex. Sure they can have plots, suspense, humor, true drama, but nearly every chapter they are thinking, doing, talking, or dreaming about sex (fucking, eating pussy, sucking cock, and the many ways of enhancing all of that). About the only time they will use euphemisms is in a historical setting. But it’s a romance, so it will have a happy ending with the couple (or more) together. Oddly, at least I thought it odd, HarperCollins considered my books erotica. That’s why even though the first one was published under the Impulse imprint, the other two were placed under the Red imprint. (Circle of Desire, Circle of Danger, and Circle of Deception.)

There you go. Like I said, I don’t think my books have a lot of sex scenes as one reviewer claimed. But of course, another reviewer for the same book said I had too few. People have to decide on their own.
